Who approves rate changes

Investor-owned utilities in Michigan need approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) to change their rates. Rate cases, filings and decisions are public. Search the regulator's dockets.

Can you switch electricity providers?

In limited cases. Michigan allows some customers to choose a competitive electricity supplier, but participation is restricted. Retail choice is capped at 10% of each utility's sales; the cap is fully subscribed and new customers join a waitlist.
